SFIWJ's Jeanette Smith, along with WeCount! Community Worker Center Director Jonathan Fried and ten workers and staff from WeCount!, traveled to the recent National Day Laborer Organizing Network Conference in Maryland. Approximately 275 workers and worker center staff from around the country came together at the bi-annual General Assembly. It was an inspiring week of workshops, actions, and strategizing as workers from around the country had the opportunity to visit legislative officials, hold an action against immigration raids in front of the white house, and meet with other workers to talk about wage theft, organizing and even gender equality. One worker tearfully stated on the final day that he could never have imagined as someone who is undocumented that he could be a leader, that he could be someone who would speak to elected officials on behalf of other workers.
