UPCOMING ACTION:
PRAYING WITH OUR FEET
Date:               Thursday, October 11th

Time:              3:30 – 5 p.m.
(the workers typically get off of work around 4 p.m.)

Place:             Fisher Island Ferry Terminal

WHY?

As Fr. Frank Corbishley so eloquently stated:

"Praying with our feet" is a phrase (I believe) coined by Rabbi Abraham Heschel, one of the Twentieth
Century's pre-eminent theologians.  (He's one of my favorites, anyway!)  I believe he used the phrase in
reference to his participation in civil rights marches in the 1960's.  Before one such march he put on his
prayer shawl and prayed, and some young college student asked why he was bothering with that.  He
replied that there was no difference between his verbal prayers and his action of walking with the civil
rights marchers, that it was all prayer.

We can make this simple act a part of our faith witness on behalf of the condo workers on Fisher
Island.  They are isolated by virtue of geography and the management company's efforts to keep them
isolated.  Whenever we have a presence on the causeway by the Fisher Island ferry terminal, we are
keeping the issue of the workers' rights in the public mind, we are a visible sign of support to the
workers who see us as they leave work, and we serve as a reminder to the Fisher Island residents and
the management company that the workers do have support from the faith community and that we have
not forgotten them.
